The Aesthetic of the Moment

To ponder: The majority of independent film as an aesthetic of the “moment.” A series of memorable moments more than a cohesive whole. Opposed to mainstream film, in which every moment must serve the main point of the movie, whether it be plot, humor, or action. Generalizations, of course. Needs more thought. I was thinking the very same thing, yesterday. You must be a genius. I was was revisiting The Life Aquatic in my mind (which is more of a mainstream independent film I guess).

We must both be geniuses! Yeah, there’s a ‘feel’ to independent film…to the extent that some mainstream films seem independent to me, and vice versa. It hit me yesterday that I think it’s this focus on ‘moments’ rather than the whole plot that gives a film that indie feel. Wes Anderson films are sort of in the middle, as you say.
