{"id":36910,"date":"2022-12-18T09:46:17","date_gmt":"2022-12-18T17:46:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.the-frame.com\/blog\/2022\/12\/getting-through-it\/"},"modified":"2022-12-18T09:46:17","modified_gmt":"2022-12-18T17:46:17","slug":"getting-through-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.the-frame.com\/blog\/2022\/12\/getting-through-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting through it"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Apparently the language leaders in Japan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nippon.com\/en\/japan-topics\/c03831\/\">have identified<\/a> \u201c<em>taipa<\/em>\u201d as the word of the year in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p><em>Taipa<\/em> is used for talking about efficient use of time, and is particularly associated with the members of Generation Z, born roughly between 1995 and 2010. In search of optimum \u201ctime performance,\u201d they might watch films and drama at double speed or via recut versions that only show major plot points, and skip to the catchy parts of songs.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>I fully agree with <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ayjay.org\/the-age-of-taipa\/\">Alan Jacobs<\/a> here. If the only point is to get through as much content as possible, what is the point of experiencing that content in the first place? You\u2019re not using your time efficiently, you\u2019re wasting your time. Maybe you\u2019re only wasting half as much time, but it\u2019s still wasted time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>Still, it must be said: <em>taipa<\/em> isn\u2019t \u201cefficient use of time.\u201d Instead, it\u2019s about the <em>worst<\/em>use of one\u2019s time, especially one\u2019s leisure time, that I can imagine. There are no canons of \u201cefficiency\u201d that apply here unless you think that there\u2019s some kind of value in watching <em>more<\/em> movies and listening to <em>more<\/em> music, regardless of quality or interest. And if you think that you\u2019re nuts \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ayjay.org\/and-then\/\">as I have recently suggested<\/a>. As I said in that post: If you\u2019re accelerating the rate at which you listen and watch, <em>what are you trying to get to<\/em>? <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>And yet I am convicted, as I have literally said \u201cwe need to get through this\u201d TO STUDENTS in my classroom when we get behind, and that reinforces the exact opposite way of relating to literature than I want them to have. We do have a great plan for the year and it does require \u201cgetting through\u201d a certain amount of text per week or we\u2019re not going to get to everything. But as good and important as everything planned is, I must change how I talk about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We just started <em>The Brothers Karamazov<\/em> (which I\u2019m swiftly becoming convinced may in fact be the greatest novel ever written) and I\u2019ve been more than idly thinking a good year-long class plan would actually be to read <em>Brothers K<\/em>\u2026and then read <em>Brothers K <\/em>again. What are we getting to by getting through it? Reading it again.
